Garage door R-value

Garage door R-value measures how well the door resists heat loss.

Why it matters

An insulated door can reduce temperature swings and reduce cold drafts into nearby rooms.

Where people get this wrong

A high R-value door does not fix air leaks around the perimeter. Insulating the door is only part of comfort. Air sealing and walls matter too.

Real-world example

A bedroom above the garage feels cold in winter. A better-insulated garage door can help, but you usually also need air sealing between garage and house.

Where this hits your build

This term shows up during construction and affects decisions that are hard to reverse once the work moves forward. Understanding it now saves time, money, and frustration later.

Most people do not just struggle with terms. They struggle with the decisions tied to them.
